Álava is the most unknown province of the Basque Country. However, despite being the only one that does not have a coastline, authentic golf gems await in it. Places like Jon Rahm’s boyhood course or Izki Golf (Seve’s best design) are located in the Basque mountains of Álava, surrounded by a magical natural environment of valleys, hills, caves, rivers and natural parks.
Álava hides numerous villages with a medieval ambience that are worth visiting.
Rioja Alavesa (Álava wine región) is a privileged región where you can find jewels like the medieval walled town of Laguardia, that Belongs to the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. Located on a hill and surrounded by a wall, its medieval atmosphere can still be detected through its narrow streets and corners, but also in the five gates that give access to the village. Founded in the 10th century as a defense of the Kingdom of Navarre, Laguardia is full of medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical buildings.
The wine is and has been one of the main economic supports of this town (and the entire region), so it is not surprising that the wineries conform their urban landscape.
Laguardia is the most representative town of the Wine Region and the one that has developed without interruption since the early Middle Ages, with signs that this process might date back to Roman times. It features an exceptional cultural landscape, the result of human efforts to adapt to their environment and the development of a culture strongly associated with the world of wine which goes back to 2,000 years. La Rioja and Rioja Alavesa Vines and Wine Cultural Landscape are included in the World Heritage list of UNESCO.
The closest airports are located in Bilbao and Vitoria (Capital city of the Basque Country). Logroño, capital city of La Rioja, it’s only 15 minutes away from Laguardia and also offers a wide range of leisure activities, wonderful bars and restaurants and a great golf course with breathtaking views.
